Brown (David Mann) and Madea (Tyler Perry) in TYLER PERRY’S MADEA’S BIG HAPPY FAMILY.

My Favorite: On-Screen Relationships (Honorable Mentions)

I just finished binge watching “Forever” with two of my best friends and the relationship between the dad (played brilliantly by Wood Harris) and mom (played by Karen Pittman) go me to thinking. Who all are in my top 10 relationships? I sat down and made a list but everyone didn’t fit, and so, instead of making a list that was miles long, I’ll put my honorable mentions here. We have as follows (in no particular order here):

  1. Brown and Madea – Any TP Production
    • Tyler Perry and David Mann as the childhood friends(?) turned neighbors that get on each other’s nerves brought me so much joy as a child. Say what you want about the crassness of Perry’s movies and plays, it’s somebody’s life somewhere. Somebody somewhere has a Brown in their life. Somebody somewhere has a Madea in their life, and they are exactly like these two. I salute these two because they are dynamic. I love when you can see two actors you know really like each other and it makes for better tv, movie, play, or whatever.
  2. Martin and Gina “Martin”
    • Yes, I heard you all gasp. I said what I said. Martin and Gina, for me, are iconic, but as far as their relationship, again for me, it’s complicated. Yes, they were cute and funny, but did I get anything I could take away from their relationship. No, no I didn’t, so here is where they go. I DON’T WANT TO HEAR IT!
  3. Yelena and Bob “Thunderbolts*”
    • As I stated in my review of “Thunderbolts*,” I was rooting for Bob and Yelena. The chemistry was so easy between them two. We still have to see Susan and Reed in “Fantastic Four: First Steps” and compare but I think we will see Bob and Yelena again as a unit. I will take a relationship or them being the best of friends but I will need to see them again.
  4. Albert and Armand “The Birdcage”
    • I just love this damn movie so much! I really do. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane are comedians who are and were masters in their craft, and when you have that in one movie, that movie becomes iconic. The line my mom and I always recite to each other is when they decide to tell Albert that Val is getting married and Albert goes, “I don’t understand.” His husband spits back at him, “Yes you do.” I don’t know why my mom and I cackle so hard at that but it’s our thing. I don’t need to remind everyone that it’s important to see different faces and relationships on screen. Yes, it can be too much at times and overwhelming but think about how much you’ve grown as a person from the exposure you had to people.
  5. Black and Kevin “Moonlight”
    • I almost forgot about this relationship. There was so much said between these two men with no words. That’s what makes a relationship memorable. Not what is said out loud but what these writers can get us to see and feel. That way we can infer what’s going on in the relationship. At a certain point, I will watch this ACADEMY AWARD WINNING film again and do a deep dive. It deserves that and more.
  6. Stefan and Laura/Myra and Steve “Family Matters”
    • You all already know that one of my favorite TV show scenes of all time is Stefan’s first appearance on the show. Stefan and Laura’s relationship, although temporary because you know…science, was so cute. Remember when Steve found a way to separate them and they went to Disney? Aww, nostalgia!
  7. Cookie and Lucious Lyon “Empire”
    • Honestly, I love Taraji and Terrance together. They’re Black film royalty. They took that chemistry from “Hustle & Flow” and ran with it and we watched it for five seasons straight, craziness and all. Thanks for that roller coaster ride of theatrics you two.
  8. Jason and Lyric/Jason and Josh “Jason’s Lyric”
    • Yes, Jason and his brother’s relationship was toxic BUT that dynamic was something you just couldn’t put your finger on. I don’t know what it was but it was the unspoken chemistry between Allen Payne and Bokeem Woodbine. They argued, Josh did wrong, but, until the end, he never really crossed his brother. He loved his brother so much, and that’s part of why he was so unhinged at the end. Jason was all he had left really. He was the only person who hadn’t given up on him. Now, Jason and Lyric were cute. I love the cat and mouse hunt. It was done is such a pure way.
  9. Relationships in “Once Upon a Time”
    • Sure, you came for Snow and Charming but you stayed for Rumple and Belle, Rumple and Regina, Hook and Emma, Rumple and Cora (this might be my fave honestly), and all the friendships in between. I adore this show and wished we had a better ending but alas.
  10. Jamie and Fancy “The Jamie Foxx Show”
    • I was just reminded of this relationship and it’s another cat and mouse situation that I loved. Their chemistry was so great we actually thought they were dating in real life. Garcelle said they did go on a date, but remain great friend to this day.

Alright, tell me who I missed. Remember, these are the honorable mentions. Tell me who is on that list, and later, we’ll discuss who will be on your top ten list.
