With all this talk of a multiverse, What If…? seems less and less like a fantasy series where we explore what could have happened had one thing been altered or changed. After watching Loki, you could make an argument that all of what we will see in What If…? could be a branch timeline that got pruned, and if that is what we’re doing, Marvel, I see what you did there.
The incomparable Jeffery Wright voices Uatu aka The Watcher. In the trailer, he asserts that he observes all that happens in this…multiverse…but he does not, will not and cannot interfere with that’s happening. According to the comics, he can when he feels like it but Head Writer A.C. Bradley explains it like this: Uatu is like a person who watches that rat in the subway dragging a giant slice of NY pizza. He goes on to say, “a guy watching a rat drag a slice of pizza across the platform. He has no interest in becoming friends with the rat, living amongst the rat, or doing rat things. He just goes, ‘Man, this is remarkable. Look at the little guy go!’ That is The Watcher’s relationship with humanity.” So basically, he’s watching us do stupid things while shaking his head. Got it!
First and foremost, I believe this is the legendary Chadwick Boseman’s last performance. It will make a lot of us sad but happy to be able to hear him be T’Challa again, if only for a moment. In T’Challa’s episode, we explore what would have happened if Yondu and his crew abducted T’Challa from Wakanda instead of Peter Quill from St. Charles, Missouri. So what if T’Challa became Star-Lord? Sounds fun. The trailer shows Yondu and T’Challa…i mean Star-Lord looting places and taking people out but think about it? What happens to Wakanda? Who will secede T’Chaka? For a split second, we see Shuri in battle with the Dora Milaje and we also, in another scene, see Killmonger, who might just be Erik Stevens at this point because he wouldn’t have that hate for his home, flipping off a rhino with one of those virbranium spears. So is he King of Wakanda? Also, I saw Ego but are we changing the story completely so T’Challa was never the son of T’Chaka and Ramonda? Speaking of Ramonda, we see her in full Dora gear which seems interesting to me.
Speaking of Killmonger, this trailer opens up with a familiar scene from Iron Man where Stark’s convoy was bombed and the people kidnapped Tony. In this version, Killmonger saves Stark and so he never ends up in a cave making an iron suit out of a box of scrapes. Later, we see that the six Avengers we know are replaced by Gamora in a suit much like her father’s, I suspect Killmonger in the gold version of the Black Panther suit, T’Challa as Star-Lord and Thor. It looks to be just four of them and I don’t think they’re in NY.
The Dr. Strange what if has me a little confused. I think it’s what if The Ancient One used her Dark Magic for evil instead of good and therefore taught Strange those same ways. You all will have to help me with theories on that one because I have no clue. Maybe he didn’t get in the accident and never needed to go to Kamar-Taj. It kind of looks like Strange will be pushed to his limit here.
Good ole Loki has an army now. Did get Thanos his stuff so he could be granted this army, that looks like they’re going against the US Army. I can’t quite see who is behind Loki in the shot that I’ve paused but maybe they’re the Sif and Warriors Three. Just a thought.
Captain Peggy Carter. There is no ring to this but what if the military didn’t shun women and Peggy was able to take the serum and become the first super soldier. Girl power moment! It seems as if the military is still with Stark instead of him making the suits for himself. At one moment, we see Carter on the back of a suit that looks similar to War Machine. So if Stark was rescued, there would be no need to recruit him as an Avenger and he wouldn’t think twice about selling his weapons to the highest bidder. Now, I see Strange and Carter together and I have no idea how this could happen. Like none but it seems like Captain Carter is going rogue. We see her destroy a military tank with her shield but why?
I see Vision, not voiced by Paul Bettany which makes me sad, Howard the Duck, Spider-Man and more things I can’t make heads or tails of but What If…? debuts on Disney+ on August 11th. Both seasons will have ten episodes. Yes, I said both seasons. The second season is in production.
