DID YOU ALL KNOW SHONDA RHIMES DID THIS SCREENPLAY?! I started watching The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement and in reading the opening credits, a thing I love to do, I saw her name and was floored. Three strong black women attached to this film, Raven Symone, Whitney Houston and Shonda Rhimes, and again, the incomparable Julie Andrews. Let’s go back.
Remember Chris Pine before he starred in those awful Wonder Woman movies produced by DC? He was a prince in this film and was good. Moving on to this council meeting about who is ti take the throne. Why are they wearing these wigs? We are in the 21st century and there is no need for this type of pom and circumstance this late in the game. And another thing, this is another example of men creating a standard for women that fits what they want and women having to bend over backwards to do it in order to get what they want. Also, who can fall in love in 30 days AND agree to be married? Can it happen? Yes. Does it last? Never.
I want to give a special shoutout to Joe who is Royal Head of Security and takes his job VERY seriously. If you rewatch the movie, you will see where Joe literally shoves a man out of the way to get to Mia and her horse. There are some celebrities, besides Beyonce, whose security wouldn’t even stand in front of them to get to their car. Joe flat out told that man that if he hurt his girl he would have to answer to him AND whatever crimes he committed to do so. He basically told this man he would murder or maim him in some fashion with no remorse and full immunity in 46 countries including Puerto Rico.
Did anyone else find it odd that a white man was singing “Miracles Happen” in Mandarin? Just me or you didn’t remember it either?
Angry Mia sounds like Harry from Home Alone and it tickled me. The next scene is the parade. Did you catch Abigail Breslin as the little orphan girl? What I love about Mia and how she carries herself is how she is just a girl with a tiara–nothing more. What she told those girls and boys combined with Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway” almost made me cry. Being a princess to Mia was about being herself while growing up, not growing up and losing herself.
I never knew I needed a Julie Andrews/Raven Symone duet until I watched this movie. The best!! I know Raven lost her mind when someone came to her and said, “Hey, we want you to sing with Julie Andrews.”
I want to say that Lily is me. She introduced herself as the royal best friend and stated that she did not like Nicholas. If you’re reading this and you know me, you know this is exactly how I would introduce myself to someone my friend and I did not like if I were into introducing myself to people who are not worth an introduction.
I do want to make a point that I would have like the roles reversed with the guys. What I mean is I would have wanted the guy she was to marry be Nicholas to start and him to establish the coup that way instead of the other way around.
There have been rumors that Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews want to make a Princess Diaries 3 and I say leave it be. Both movies were, surprisingly, really good. We got to go from meeting Mia as a dorky American kid to the Queen of Genovia and it was such a magical ride.
