So listen, I love a Fast and Furious as much as the next person…however, I don’t think I will like this Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw. I know this is not the popular opinion but hear me out.
I want to start by saying that I am a fan of movies where stuff blows up, where cars drive fast, fist fights, and the bad guy being hot. I’m a strange girl. With that being said, I don’t think this will be my cup of tea and I really wanted it to be. Here’s what I think.
It has all the things I like. Hot men, fast cars, stuff blowing up…but it doesn’t move me. At this point in my life, I need more in a movie. So far, I don’t have enough and Idris Elba should be enough. He is not.
Let’s recap. Luke Hobbs (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) must join forces, even though they hate each other, in order to stop this enemy Brixton Lore (Idris Elba). Did I mention that Brixton is indestructible? Like bulletproof and hand-to-hand combat is not an issue for him. I am interested in how you attempt to beat him but again, this has not sold me.
The Fast and Furious series, although at times redundant, gets bigger each time we see the newest edition. The new angle here is a former law enforcement officer and a criminal must work together to bring down another criminal with no real backstory. I feel like we’ve seen too many movies like this and it’s going to take a lot for this movie to be different. So far, it looks like they’re resting on Johnson, Elba and Statham being in a movie together, which is awesome by the way, but what else.
I might go watch but I feel like I’ll be disappointed. I also read that both Shaw and Hobbs will not appear in the next Fast and Furious which is concerning. Remember that whole squabble between Tyrese and The Rock? Yeah, so that’s out so I can’t even look forward to this movie linking to the last one. (Sidenote: Why are we making a ninth Fast and Furious? We don’t need it but no one ever listens to be.)
I’ll keep tabs on this one for y’all.
