I heard so much about Obsession when it first came out that I thought I had missed something. So, when my best friends suggested we watch this movie, I was eager to see what all the fuss was about. I was disappointed.
For those who don’t know, Obsession is the story of a mild mannered man named Bear (no last name was given and I want to know who named him Bear). Anyway, Bear has a crush on Nikki. Later, Nikki tells Bear that she plans to leave their town. Sensing that his chance to tell him how he feels slipping away, he decides to try and profess his love for her by replacing her necklace that she dropped down the drain. While he’s in the crystal store, he sees a “one wish willow” that basically tells him he can make one wish and it will come true. Are there a ton of warnings? Yes yes there are but he does it anyway.
As soon as he makes his wish, Nikki IMMEDIATELY starts to act weird, and if you know anything about me and one of my best friends, we take nothing seriously. We cackled through this entire film! I haven’t read any reviews about this film, but it seems that everyone was in love with this film. I could not tell you why because my face looks like Nikki, Ian, and Bear in the post image to this post. For the longest time while watching this, I thought it was an A24 film. It is not. It’s a Focus Features film.
The person who pissed me off the most was Bear. I get it. You love her. I’ve been there, but as soon as she started to hurt herself and THEN killed Sarah, SHE HAD TO GO, BEAR! I was so upset that he killed himself instead of killing her! There were so many opportunities. Instead, Bear killed himself. I do wonder about the aftermath of this now that the spell is lifted off of Nikki. Ian has a billion dollars at his house that really only he and Bear knew about. Does Nikki remember him saying that when he walked in? Doubt it.
The beginning of this film also felt very slow. I felt like I was waiting for things to happen that never did and when they did, it was funny and not terrifying. For me, it was a cool watch with friends to laugh at. Would I watch it again? No, no I would not. There wasn’t enough there to thrill me. Plus, Bear got on my nerves. The funniest scene for me was when they went to Ian’s party. Her moving Sarah’s chair out out of the way and replacing her
