Whoever did the marketing for this movie, give them a raise. I feel like I saw the ad for this movie more times than I can count or even remember. What I do remember is those ads are the reason I spent the last few days watching the two season of “Noah’s Arc” from the Logo TV days and the “Noah’s Arc: Jumping the Broom.” I felt as though I had to watch those before I watched the newest edition to the series. I was partially right. To be honest, I did not need to watch “Jumping the Broom,” but I didn’t know that at the time, so here we are.
“Noah’s Arc” is the work of Patrik-Ian Polk and revolves around the lives of four gay friends in LA. Noah is the sweet one and a budding screenwriter. Alex is married to Trey and is what we would think is a stereotypical gay man. He’s loud, he’s feminine, and he’s the owner of an HIV clinic. Ricky is what his friends call a “free spirit.” Ricky doesn’t love commitment, and if you watched “Jumping the Broom” he explains why….in a way. Ricky is the hookup queen and also owns his own clothing store….although we never mention that after the series. Chance is a college professor who is also married to a man named Eddie. They adopted a child named Kenya who we also don’t see after the series.
I am not a gay man. I am just an ally, but I have trouble accepting Noah and Wade’s love. It seemed very convenient but I went along with it because I was late to this party anyway. Who am I to judge all these years later? But here I am blogging about the show and movies. Also, did they live in the part of LA where there were only gay men? Was this equivalent of when “Friends” didn’t have Black people? How was every man that Ricky approached gay? We didn’t see him meet a random person who wasn’t gay or bi. I wanted an explanation. I literally never got one. If you remember watching this series and thinking the same thing, please comment!
We didn’t leave our characters much different than when the series ended, honestly. Chance and Eddie were revamping their marriage….again. Noah and Wade had gotten married. Trey and Alex had their son, nicknamed OJ. And Ricky had professed his love for Noah, but understood that he and Noah would be nothing more than friends. He would continue to be the hookup queen.
Now, Noah is a big time screenwriter and director. Wade is now and A&R, although he once was a screenwriter like Noah and showed no interest in music much less in hardcore rap music but whatever. Alex seems to be a full time drag queen and drag queen/gay bar owner. I did love when I saw Alex do his first number in drag in the series and wondered why they never went back to that. Thank y’all for this. We’ll come back to it. Chance is grieving the loss of Eddie, and I like how they made you believe he was still alive until they went to the gravesite. I was confused for a few seconds until I got myself together, but I came around. Ricky is back with Junito but only for a limited time as Junito now lives in Toronto and will not go with him. I always love him with Junito; however, when we last left those two, Ricky found a man for Junito that Junito found more interesting than Ricky. So, they split. I get that they are different people now but…what happened? They don’t say. This bothered me.
Noah and Wade have decided to have kids, but their busy lives threaten to get in the way of both of them being able to be as present as they would like for the kids when they get here. They found a surrogate named Ester, and we did not get enough of her! Here’s what we could have scraped for more Ester. The screenplay for Beyonce. The hunt for a nanny. The extraness that was Olivia. We could have cut a drag number, but I needed more Ester. 2-Tone was almost someone I thought we could have cut, but once he told his story to Noah, I needed more of him, too!
The pieces were there, but it needed to be tighter. Now, there could be another movie. Maybe there will be series restart, but if either of these happen, bring Ester back for any reason at all and expand on 2-Tone’s story. Make him part of the family. Also, tell us what happens with Ricky. My favorite characters were Ricky and Alex and you can’t do my sweet Ricky like this. You didn’t make his character contract HIV, but I feel like y’all thought you had to punish him somehow and cancer was the way to do it. You save my Ricky!!
Last but not least, I am not a doctor nor did I go to anybody’s medical school but I know that three babies need a C-section. There isn’t enough room in the womb for all three so they should have to come a little earlier than full term. And this is just from casually watching medical shows on Lifetime or TLC.
Tell us, Patrik-Ian, will there be a restart of this series? Could be better than doing a solid movie. We could explore Chance’s new romance. Get more into how Trey magically became a doctor in those moments of delivering triplets. Obviously, journey with Wade and Noah as first-time parents. Give us a hint! But make sure to keep this same production quality and story writing. It’s more sophisticated now and I like this new age “Noah’s Arc.”
